MOYO – HOLLOW FACES

MOYO returns with HOLLOW FACES, a record that looks directly at the disconnection and emotional absence that lives behind the masks most people have learned to wear so well nobody questions them anymore.

The song moves on a dark, layered production that creates the kind of atmospheric unease that makes you feel slightly watched and slightly watchful at the same time, with a vocal performance that stays cold and observational in a way that suits the subject matter far better than raw emotion ever could have. The record sits in a space that is more uncomfortable than most music is willing to occupy and it stays there deliberately rather than offering any easy exit which is exactly what makes it compelling to return to despite not being an easy listen.

MOYO has been building a distinct creative identity through Desert of Voices and Salt and Silence that marks them as an artist committed to the kind of thematic territory that most people scroll past quickly on a streaming platform because it demands more than a few seconds of actual attention to properly receive. That commitment to difficulty and depth is what makes their catalogue feel like it belongs to a different category from most of what surrounds it and HOLLOW FACES is another clear statement of intent from an artist who knows exactly what they are doing and why.

This one stays with you in the way that images from a dream do, present in the background of your thinking for longer than you expected and harder to shake than something this brief has any right to be.
